What is Magic: Temporal
– Tue, Oct 22, 2019 at 06:59:01 PM
In this series, we explore the different subschools (specialties/styles) of magic that appear in Deep Magic. We hear from the designers on the subschools and their thought processes, ideas, and the general “feel” behind the subschools. These subschools can be used individually to introduce one extra layer or type of spellcasting to your world or they can all be used together to showcase a diverse array of spellcasting disciplines in your world.
Today’s subschool is temporal. Designer Carlos Ovalle has the following to say about temporal magic:
The control and manipulation of time is an esoteric and mysterious branch of magic. Spellcasters who seek to alter time have the potential to perform incredible deeds. That potential is tempered by the great danger of intervening with time, which resists mortal interference. Many gods, too, look unfavorably at those who try to divert or dam the currents of time, and their disfavor should never be taken lightly.

You unlocked new variants for the charm person spell! Now you can charm your friends, your coworkers, and even that irksome little trapsmith in the warren down the way who won’t stop hiding traps in your desk...
Speaking of traps! The next two stretch goals increase the backer spells to 40 (at $150,000) and add new magical traps (at $160,000) to Deep Magic! Bring your friends to Deep Magic (we won't fault you if your pit trap leads them to us) and help us unlock these stretch goals – with increased backer spells, maybe your spell and your friend’s spell will be included in the book!
Congrats on the latest stretch goal and thank you for your continued support!

Today’s subschool is shadow. Designer Wolfgang Baur has the following to say about shadow magic:
Shadow magic has been a big part of my campaigns since AD&D days, and it's always been accompanied by certain dangerous or at least creepy new spells. The idea of dousing party lanterns, turning their own shadows against them, or gathering all the darkness in a large area and empowering it to drain and destroy .... Well, shadows are cold and dark and hard to grasp, so they make for a fun, slippery kind of magic. Some of the spells in this particular tradition go back to the 3.5 D&D days, and all of them are designed to make players shudder and wonder what's out beyond the campfire light.

Today’s subschool is rune. Designer Chris Harris has the following to say about rune magic:
The knowledge and power of rune magic derives its potency from the gods themselves. Handed down to lesser beings, sometimes openly and sometimes against divine edict, the secrets of the runes bring not only great magical power but a deeper understanding of the world and everything in it. Requiring much sacrifice for true mastery, those who attain such wisdom may lead entire societies, or bury them, as the gods will it. Furthermore, one need not dedicate one's life to the endless study of books and scrolls to attain such mastery. Warriors of great renown and rogues of infinite cunning throughout history have also commanded the secrets of rune magic, making their victories possible.
