Deep Magic Release Dates
– Mon, Apr 27, 2020 at 11:34:41 PM
We're in the final run to release Deep Magic this summer, but we are (perhaps obviously) not going to ship the hardcover in April. Unfortunately, our printing plant shut down. In addition, our BackerKit survey has not locked down yet, and we need backers to fill those out in the next 7 days. Finally, we're making additional changes in the digital proofreading stage after some errors were caught during the Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds coding.
Our revised shipping plan breaks down in multiple stages rather than One Big Release. We may or may not continue this pattern as conditions change.
Add-Ons in BackerKit Locking Down
The add-ons in BackerKit will be closed on Monday, May 4, and credit cards will be charged on Tuesday, May 5. This includes charges for new items and charges for shipping printed books.
Add-On Delivery Dates
Add-ons of pre-existing titles will ship in the first wave. These could go out in May. This includes:
- Beyond Damage Dice: Weapon Options for 5th Ed. (PDF)
- 12 Peculiar Towers Map Pack (15 JPGs for VTT)
- Eldrich Lairs 5e (PDF)
- 12 Peculiar Towers for 5e (PDF)
- Demon Cults & Secret Societies for 5th Edition (PDF)
- Warlock 11: Treasure Vault (PDF)

- Warlock 2: Dread Magic (PDF)

- Creature Codex for 5th Edition (PDF)
- Kobold Guide to Gamemastering (PDF)
- Warlock Lair: The Clattering Keep (PDF)
- Warlock Lair: The Returners Tower (PDF)
- Complete Kobold Guide to Game Design, 2nd Ed. (PDF)
- Warlock Lair: Bastion of Rime and Salt (PDF)
- Kobold Ecologies Vol 1 (PDF)
- Kobold Guide to Magic Print + PDF
- Kobold Guide to Combat (PDF)
- Midgard Worldbook for 5th Edition and PFRPG (PDF)
- Kobold Guide to Magic (PDF)
- Kobold Guide to Board Game Design (PDF)
Digital Release Dates
We anticipate the Deep Magic for 5th Edition PDF, the Roll20 licenses for the Compendium, and the Fantasy Grounds licenses to go live to backers in July.
Print Release Date
The Kobolds have been looking for a replacement printer (as our usual printer is shut down by the pandemic). Happily, we have a commitment from a shipper who promises delivery in late July, which means shipments to US backers in early August.
Naturally, we regret the print delay tremendously, though we are happy to take the time to correct errors and provide a better final book, file, and license for your games.
Thank you again for your support and your understanding.

Deep Magic Deep Into Layout!
– Wed, Mar 18, 2020 at 01:00:14 AM
Hey everyone - things are moving along quite well in Deep Magic land! We are deep into layout out of the book and will soon be moving on to the proofing phase.
As I work on the layout, I can't tell you how many times I stopped to read something that caught my eye. If layout takes a bit longer to wrap up than anticipated, it's due to the countless times I've stopped to think "oh, cool!" to myself, before getting back to the layout task at hand.
Speaking of "oh, cool!" ... the spread I'm sharing here showcases an awesome, never-seen-before illustration for the Alkemancy chapter by the amazing Marcel Mercado. Be honest - how many of you checked out that art and said ... "oh, cool!"
Stay safe and healthy!

The History of Deep Magic and New Monsters!
– Tue, Feb 11, 2020 at 01:40:15 AM
While diving through all the spells and magic of Deep Magic, we spoke with Kobold-in-Chief Wolfgang Baur about the history of the series. Here’s what he had to say:
The Deep Magic series has always been the Kobold Press title for our spells-and-magic expansions, and it has been wildly inventive, expanding the possibilities with entirely new themes and mechanics from its earliest days. Originally, it started in 2015 with Clockwork Magic, the Midgard-centric school of constructs, temporal magic, and gear magic. It grew more general and universal over time, retaining some Midgard material but with increasingly rich, 5th Edition flavor. We added shadow, elemental, dragon, and ring magic—often with associated arcane traditions, domains, or feats—and more than a dozen others.
So... Why the wait for print? The Deep Magic hardcover project is something we've wanted from the beginning, but... Where to draw the line? As we kept coming up with new ideas and new directions, we realized compiling and updating the material then putting it into a smelter to refine it was something we wanted to do just once. Finally, though, we are here in the thick of the smelter, finalizing the developments and moving steadily toward layout!
We got to this point of a compiled volume a little later than we would have liked, but the end is in sight! We’re aiming to begin layout in the coming week, and we’re still on track for delivery in May.
For those who are curious as to what we're up to next, please check out our new monster book, Tome of Beasts 2 on Kickstarter. The project has 11 days left and has already unlocked 16 stretch goals! Backers who pledge at the $25 level and higher can submit a monster to us for possible publication in the book. If you have a devious monster that terrorizes players in your home game, our judges would love to see it!
Happy Gaming!
